How to Rebuild Spotlight's Index on a Mac

Sometimes spotlight search gets corrupted and it will not work correctly if this index is incomplete.  The following are instructions on how to fix.

1. From the Apple Menu, select system preference.  Once system preferences is open, Select Spotlight

2. Select Privacy Tab and then the + sign at the bottom

3. Select Macintosh Hard Drive

4. Select the hard disk or volume you just added, and then click the – button.  Spotlight will rebuild the index of the selected hard disk or volume.  This process can take 30 minutes to a few hours to complete index, depending on how many files you have.    If you select the spotlight hourglass in the upper right hand corner, you will see a similar image below
